Glimmer: Hull INT Film Festival

Literally 2 hours before the event I got an email telling me 'Supposed to Be' was going to be screened at the Hull Film Festival.

The last event of the festival they screen short films at 'The Lamp' and I am always happy to gain exposure for the work.

It was actually over a year ago I think since I posted the film to SLACK VIDEO.

Gari Sullivan - Has organised 'Clip: Stockton Festival of Short Film' a three day event which takes place from 17th-19th October and features national, international and regional film. It also includes a programme of workshops and talks on the different aspects of filmmaking.

'Supposed to Be' is going to be screened there. I love individual descriptions of the work because to be honest I find it hard to 'Sum up your film in 15 words!'. Others however seem to do it well.

Supposed to Be

This is the latest flick doing the rounds.

The guys at IceWhole.com are currently pimping this short out to all the lucky corporations and shows.

It has also won BEST EXPERIMENTAL FILM at the End of the Pier International Film Festival and it was a great festival (obviously!) and a first for me. Talking to people though it seems people either really get this work or it made zero impact. It was really nice to meet such enthusiastic folk because frankly I was sick of this damned film it had taken me a year to make it and get it right. But some people really got it and had lots of alternative ideas of what was going on in the short which I loved to hear especially when some of the stuff never crossed my mind, or was there then got forgotten as a theme but somehow is still there.

I really carefully story boarded this short, everything was planned because I knew as soon as I started I would have to finish it.

I did pitch the concept to Digital City who had previously funded my 'Rustic Dreams' animated short. But the key members of the board went against me (reportly a 6-2 majority in my favour) because they thought I should stick to animation.

I love animation, but an artist is an artist and an idea is designed for its medium usually. This had to be live action, and I really wanted to do it.

I was gutted at the time but went along that evening to the Film Concept evening where 'Art is Alive' was being screened. The guy who ran the thing told me to 'just do it anyway'. Good advice.

As I have heard several times 'really the best way to become a film maker is to make films'.

A short that was shot in a day a few weeks before Christmas to enter BAFTA'S 60 Seconds of fame competition...

Q: How did my film get through?
A: Your film was chosen as one of the best from your region by a panel of regional industry professionals(North East & Cumbria).

A: The nominated films will be featured on BBC local news between Monday 29 January and Friday 2 February*. The times of local news bulletins vary so we will not have exact timings. Unfortunately we are unable to specify on which day your film will be featured.

A: The Public Vote will go live at 11am on Monday 29 January.

Q: When does the Public Vote close?
A: On Monday 5 February at midnight.

I didn't fucking win... But I did get into the top five in my region, against all these supposed 'Pro's'. The final winning film was cack, so... Well I got on TV!

When I finished it I hated this short, but I thought what the hell and entered it anyway. Now I kinda like it because yes there are loads of 'let's do silent comedy black and white internet film' but none of them are funny or imaginative. They in fact are usually some teary eyed fool gazing into the distance and getting exasperated over nothing (usually a badly timed and acted out nothing).

Art is Alive

Low Budget Zombie shot in my spare time in just 4 weeks! Wow, got plenty of help from my Zombie buddies and the zombie sequences were shot during Halloween so we all went out in full make up and gore to get merry.

This was my first live action film and lots of 'learning' went on as the production continued. The basic idea being an artist trapped in his home creating and writing all sorts of nasty stuff which is almost transmitted to his brain by an exterior evil. This guy becomes so lost in his own fantasy that the undead begin to gather enmass outside his home just waiting to burst in!

This is the kinda hell I felt I was surviving in Middlesbrough. Also the hatred of my day job I had at the time.
